Mission Statement

Alert Ambulance Service, Inc. is a subsidiary of Paramedic Systems, Inc. PSI was established in 1986, and began operating as Rhode Island’s first and only Private Ambulance Company to date, providing 24-hour ALS – paramedic-level service.

In February 1989, PSI acquired Alert Ambulance Service, Inc. of Fairhaven, MA—a small ambulance company with four vehicles and a dozen employees.

In the nearly 25 years since, Alert Ambulance Service, Inc. has grown to include a corporate headquarters located in Fall River, MA and 9 satellite locations in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. We employ more than 375 employees across all our locations, offering a range of medical transportation services.

“Our success is measured by the lives we touch”

Together, Alert Ambulance and Paramedic Systems, Inc. continue to provide the highest level of emergency and non-emergency medical transport services to a growing number of hospitals and communities across Massachusetts and Rhode Island. We successfully completed over 73,000 medical transports in 2013 by ambulance and chair van.

Company History

Paramedic Systems, Inc. was incorporated in the State of Rhode Island in 1986. Three years later in 1989, PSI purchased Alert Ambulance Service, of Fairhaven, MA. Alert was a small company, consisting of four vehicles and a dozen employees.

The Fall River location opened in 1989, providing 24-7 coverage to both Rhode Island and Massachusetts. This location provides both ALS and BLS ambulance transportation. In 1991, Alert purchased its first wheelchair van, and the Alert Chair Car Division was created. Also in 1991, John Moss became the sole owner and president of Alert/PSI.

In 1992, a location was opened in Cranston, RI, with a Wakefield, RI location following in 1995. The additional acquisition of Ocean State Ambulance in 1995 enabled Alert Ambulance to provide the South County area of Rhode Island with 24-hour ALS coverage. The purchase of Medi-Coach wheelchair van service in 1997 allowed for expanded chair car service in the southeastern Massachusetts area.

Alert made its largest purchase to date in December of 2005, acquiring Pathways Ambulance Service Ltd. Located in central and western Massachusetts, the Pathways acquisition included numerous contracts with municipalities to provide 911 and 911 backup services. With the purchase of Pathways, Alert Ambulance’s service area expanded to include all of Rhode Island and 10 of 14 counties in Massachusetts.

In May 2008, Alert was chosen as the preferred provider for Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence, RI. Later in 2008, Milford Whitinsville Regional Hospital ceased its paramedic intercept service, and Alert responded by increasing its resources in the area. Alert signed numerous backup/intercept agreements with the area municipalities and was awarded a contract with Milford Whitinsville Regional Hospital.

Today, Alert Ambulance Service has grown to include 12 satellite locations across Massachusetts and Rhode Island, with our corporate headquarters located in Fall River, MA. Alert employs more paramedics that any other company in Rhode Island, and we continue to expand our service area in Massachusetts.
